Koboshi Uematsu - Never give up!
植松小星
The kanji in Koboshi's given name mean "little" and "star"
I don't know if there's any such saying in the English or Japanese language, but in my country there's a saying that goes, "Like the cat around the hot porridge". It's used when someone walks around something they really want, but keep a distance because they're afraid of getting burnt. A saying that fits Koboshi, the little but great-spirited girl with the cat ears, who has been in love with Kotarou and trying to win his affection for 6 long years. Everyday she waits for him by the school, and knows exactly when to start listening for his footsteps. She has not yet been able to tell him how she feels, though. Maybe there's a certain safety in all of this? Knowing that she'll be able to see Kotarou every day, the same routines, being his friend, the girl he talks to the most. But when the weird girl Misha suddenly moves in next to Kotarou, things change! Misha clings to Kotarou all the time, which makes Koboshi horribly upset. Now, everything threatens to fall apart. Another girl shows up out of nowhere and seems to grab Kotarou for herself right in front of Koboshi's eyes. Koboshi tries to pull Misha away from him, but it seems Misha doesn't give up. She doesn't even seem to notice Koboshi's fury - because Misha is an angel, and she would gladly huggle Koboshi too! Koboshi realizes that she'll have to do something soon, if she's going to stand a chance with Kotarou.
Koboshi is small, cute and polite - but that's not all. She can also be noisy, energetic and violent. She's an active girl, who organizes class events, and learns both ballett, piano and violin. She stands up for her friends and herself, and won't tolerate such things as Hiroshi's rude comments. She's kind and understanding, towards Kotarou especially of course. She makes it clear to him that she accepts him the way he is, even when he's nervous and scared during their "courage test" out in the dark forest. Kotarou trusts her too, and even admits to her that she's the girl he talks to the most, and he probably feels comfortable around her. If Kotarou had been a "normal" boy, and not so traumatized, Koboshi probably would have been a great match for him. But as it is, Kotarou needs someone extraordinary, someone overwhelmingly loving and without reserve - nothing less than an angel, in fact. Koboshi refuses to give up and let Misha have him, although her self-confidence falters at times. Misha is so beautiful, while Koboshi herself feels so little and not pretty.. In the end, she manages to work up courage and seizes the moment, confessing everything to Kotarou. And then being rejected by the boy she's been in love with for 6 years, that really hurts, and she goes into hiding. But this rejection also means a new start for her. She's been pining after him for so long, without results. Finally she's gotten a straight answer, and she realizes that her life cannot stop because of this. She manages to turn the pain into strength, and emerges as a new Koboshi. A new haircut, new confidence, new goals in life, a new school - and gone are the kitty ears, too. A new life is starting for her, and who knows, maybe now she'll be able to open her eyes and see the new opportunities, such as another good friend of hers who has been in love with her for a long time..
